Fulcra International - Financial Planning

Investing in Uncertain Times

On 1st October Fulcra sponsored an investment seminar held in conjunction with the British Chamber of Commerce at the Sofitel on Place Jourdain in Brussels. Entitled ‘Investing in Uncertain Times’ three speakers looked at different asset classes as potential homes for the lower risk investor.

Michael Howard, the Chief Investment Officer of Ermitage, kicked off with a look at using long/short equity funds designed to both make money from equities as well as hold on to any gains in a market down turn.

Mark Deakin, a Senior Analyst with Barclays Capital, then explained how structured products work and explored the use of zero coupon bonds and derivatives to provide both a participation in stock market returns and 100% capital guarantee if markets fall.

John Stopford closed the evening with a look at the various assets classes in the fixed income sector and demonstrated how a fixed income portfolio can, with a change in weightings, provide a steady, low risk return.

With around 80 attendees the evening was rounded off with some direct questions from the audience followed by a reception and a chance to ‘meet the managers’.
